Chiredzi

Chiredzi is a town in southeastern Zimbabwe, located in Masvingo Province near the Lowveld region. It serves as a commercial and administrative center for surrounding sugarcane estates and wildlife conservancies. Geography and setting

Chiredzi lies about 430 km southeast of Harare and 230 km from Masvingo. It is located in a semi-arid lowveld zone characterized by hot temperatures and seasonal rainfall. The region’s river systems, especially the Chiredzi and Save rivers, support irrigation agriculture, essential for large-scale sugarcane cultivation.



Economy and industry

The town’s economy is dominated by sugar production centered around Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe’s Hippo Valley and Triangle estates. These estates provide employment and sustain ancillary industries such as transport, milling, and agro-processing. Small-scale farming and livestock rearing also contribute to the local economy.



Tourism and conservation

Chiredzi is a gateway to several conservation areas. Gonarezhou National Park—part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park—hosts elephants, lions, and scenic sandstone cliffs. The nearby Save Valley Conservancy is among Africa’s largest private wildlife reserves, supporting ecotourism and biodiversity initiatives that draw international visitors.
